APPOINTMENTS, CHECK UPS AND PET HEALTH ADVICE
Appointments are available with our vets from Monday to Saturday. At each consultation we will listen to your concerns, examine your pet and try to find a solution. We have a wide range of medicines available that we can use to treat your pet. Your pet may need further tests such as blood tests, x-rays or may need to be hospitalised.
NEW PUPPY & KITTEN CHECK UPS
If you have a new puppy or kitten please arrange an appointment & bring them along to the clinic for their check up. We will weigh them, start their vaccinations, give them their flea and worm treatments and answer any of your queries.
NEUTERING, SPAYING AND CASTRATION
There are numerous benefits to neutering your female pet including preventing unwanted pregnancies & litters, reducing cancer and preventing womb infections. Neutering male cats and dogs also prevents cancers and reduces roaming. We recommend neutering your pet from 5-6 months old, if you do not intend breeding from them.
BOOSTERS & VACCINATIONS
Puppies and kittens need vaccinations from the age of 2 months to prevent them picking up serious diseases. Annual boosters will maintain this protection throughout their life. Canine cough (previously called Kennel cough) vaccination is important for all dogs, even those not
going into kennels as it can be picked up anywhere dogs meet e.g. parks, housing estates, vets, pet shows.
WORM & FLEA TREATMENTS
Regular worming is essential to keep your pet healthy. External parasites such as fleas, lice, ticks and mites can now be readily treated with spot on treatments. To ensure you worm & flea your pet regularly we can send you a text reminder.
Microchipping is a simple and permanent method of identifying your pet. If they are lost or wander they can be easily identified by the microchip and can be reunited with you.
WEIGHT CHECKS & DIETARY ADVICE
Feeding the correct diet is very important for the long term health of your pet. We have a digital weighing machine at the clinic to accurately weigh your pet. If your pet needs to loose some weight we can advise you on a weight management programme including low fat food and regular weight checks.
DENTAL CHECK UPS
Many pets suffer from bad teeth and gums which can be very painful. At each visit we will examine your petís teeth and gums. We may recommend they need their teeth descaled and polished.
XRAYS AND ULTRASOUNDS
If your pet has a broken bone or has been in an accident we will recommend an xray, which can be done at the practice. Ultrasounds can be performed by Emma Tobin, a veterinary radiologist & ultrasonographer who visits the practice at our request.
As well as neutering we also do many other surgeries at the clinic including stitching wounds and removing tumours. At Callan Veterinary Hospital we have modern surgical facilities & use gaseous anaesthesia during surgery. We use the safest anaesthetic protocols. If your pet requires specialist surgery we can arrange a referral to a specialist practice in Dublin or Cork.
We recommend pet health insurance for all pets. Having pet insurance gives pet owners peace of mind, that if anything happens to their pet we can offer the best medical and surgical treatments to return their pet to health again.
Neutering vouchers are available at the practice through the Dogs Trust & Kilkenny Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (KSPCA) for discounts when neutering your pet.
